12 Giugno 2026 Tropea, A first Impression

I discovered the place by pure chance. I never planned on venturing this far south, but then a Facebook reel appeared and it was love at first sight. Tropea, Calabria, often called the most beautiful town in Italy.

The unpretentious little train station feels like a deliberate ruse, as if the town is trying to hide itself from prying eyes. But you walk just 300 steps to find the secret is out.

Having lived in Hilton Head and Charleston, I know tourist destinations but within hours I realized Tropea is a tourist destination on steroids. And yet the vibe is festive, warm, and unmistakably Italian.

Dragging my suitcase through the main strip, I take in stone buildings patched with centuries of mortar, shutters weathered by salt and sun, and in classic Italian fashion absolutely no useful street signs. I scurry down narrow alleys searching for a numbered door or my B&B’s name, but eventually you surrender to the Italian gods. They toy with me just long enough before revealing a random open doorway and a courtyard where Residenza Il Duomo is painted on the wall.

Then comes the negotiation with the four‑floor walk‑up. I’m shown to a modest room, given breakfast instructions, and handed a skeleton key. My seven‑hour journey , miraculously unscathed by the national transit strike is behind me. Time to explore.

Now familiar with the main artery of town, I follow it to its end… and there it is. Crystal‑blue water washing onto white sand beaches at the base of the 1,600‑year‑old Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Isola. The aerial view is breathtaking, but walking down the 125 steps leaves you in awe all over again. The cliffs rise above you, holding the city like a guardian watching the coastline.

The sand is soft, white, and grainy — a natural exfoliant with every step. The water is cool as the sun drops behind the sanctuary. I stand there taking in the view, the breeze, the ancient coastline.

The explorer in me knows the next four days will be unforgettable. Vietri sul Mare was beautiful, but Tropea — the land of the gods is going to be magical.
